Reference to art and science

Earlier theories of humour, including Bergson and Freud, claimed that there was no connection between wit, art and science. However, the reality proved the opposite statement. It turns out that all these phenomena are interrelated and interdependent influencing on each other, general cultural level of the audience and progress of the mankind.

Contemporary psychology regards the conscious and unconscious processes in all three fields, including art, science and wit. The artist does his best to attain a juxtaposition of the well-known and the everlasting; the scientist tries to achieve scholarly synthesis; the humorist goes at great length to contrive to collision. As the emotional motivations differ, it is absolutely natural that the discovery satisfies the desire of research; art leads to the emotional catharsis; and in its turn, humour incites evil and provides a harmless outlet for it. Nevertheless, the transition from one to the other field is continuous, as the wit, for instance, reflects the development of any society in general, in the same way as changes in art and science. There is no clear boundary where the realm of science ends and that of art or wit begins. As the quotation says it "the creative person is a citizen of both".

It is not only psychology, but a lot of other sciences that trace the connections between art and science, as the wit itself is a part of the art. Such contemplations, however, lie out of the terms of reference of the present article.
